Enchantingly Honest, Ultimately Unforgettable: Call Me by Your Name - Wiki Book Review
Is it better to speak or die?
"Call Me by Your Name is the story of an unexpected, yet powerful love that flourishes between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliff-side mansion on the Italian Riviera. It is an impressive image of making a loved one not only a part of your body but also your soul."The photo was taken from here
For this week, our task was to create a wiki entry on the wiki page created by our teacher. We were supposed to write about a book we would recommend to others to read. I chose one of my all time favourite books, Call Me by Your Name by Andre Aciman. You will see my entry in "my experience" part later. Now let's get informed a little bit about wikiing, shall we?
About Wikiing
Wiki is defined as a type of software that lets users easily create and edit website content. It also means very fast in Hawaiian.
Ward Cunningham and Bo Leuf described the essence of the Wiki concept as follows:
- A wiki invites all users—not just experts—to edit any page or to create new pages within the wiki Web site, using only a standard "plain-vanilla" Web browser without any extra add-ons.
- Wiki promotes meaningful topic associations between different pages by making page link creation intuitively easy and showing whether an intended target page exists or not.
- A wiki is not a carefully crafted site created by experts and professional writers, and designed for casual visitors. Instead, it seeks to involve the typical visitor/user in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the website landscape.
The online encyclopedia project Wikipedia is by far the most popular wiki-based website, and is one of the most widely viewed sites of any kind in the world, having been ranked in the top ten since 2007. There are tens of thousands of other wikis in use, both public and private, including wikis functioning as knowledge management resources, notetaking tools, community websites and intranets.

How wikiing would contribute to the development of language skills?
I believe that wikiing is a useful way of developing language skills. By using any kind of wiki, you can reach information written in the target language, which pushes you to read in that language; so you develop your reading skills. Trying to understand what is written in these texts, you are likely to come across unknown words. By looking those words up, you develop your vocabulary skills and learn new words. You can also find information that requires your listening. By immersing yourself into this kind of information, your listening skills will be developed. Along with these benefits, you will also grow and develop as a human being with different kinds of information you gathered by wikiing.
By using wikis in the language classroom and creating wiki pages, students will get a chance to put these skills into use. They can create stories, dictionaries, study poems. They can use wikis for brainstorming, to make up review pages of books, films, plays, which would help them develop their writing skills.
As a pre-service teacher, I will definitely incorporate wikiing into my courses in the future and definitely encourage my students to make use of wiki pages.
My experience
Because I love writing so much, it was a perfect opportunity for me to use my skills and show my creative side. I enjoyed writing my review. This book is very near and dear to my heart, thus writing about it was both exciting and a little bit of heart-breaking as well. It felt like opening up my heart completely and giving a big chunk of it to my audience. I also included a poem I write about this book to my entry. I was devastated when I finished it. Crying my eyes out, I took the pen and wrote down my thoughts. Suddenly, there it was. You can have a look at my poem below.
